Concept Cars
Concept Cars fire the imagination and create an atmosphere of wonder and surprise. One is only limited by the lack of independence and inventivness; in the designs of the next concept cars.
GM's Precept, a 80-mpg, five-passenger family sedan, is a parallel hybrid that uses a 35-kw electric motor and a three-cylinder diesel for drive.
In addition, a so-called "multipurpose unit" can cough up another 10 kW of oomph when it is not acting as a starter for the diesel engine, driving the air-conditioning compressor, generating electricity or synchronizing the gears of the automatically shifted manual transmission to allow clutchless shifting.
A few more highlights include the world's first application of lithium polymer batteries in a hybrid, the world's lightest 16-in. wheels and drive-by-wire braking, and the Cd is 0.16. If that's not good enough, GM has a fuel cell version engineered and in the development pipeline.
